Marvel Studios has shared the first teaser trailer for Captain America: Brave New World, unveiling a new look at Sam Wilson’s next mission. Anthony Mackie returns as the high-flying hero, who’s officially taken up the mantle of Captain America.
The trailer kicks off with a tense White House meeting, as Sam comes to face with newly-elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross. Harrison Ford makes his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Ross, a role originated by the late William Hurt.
Ross and Sam have a bit of a history: In his previous role as Secretary of State, Ross was responsible for arresting Sam and his fellow Avengers during the events of Captain America: Civil War. Now as president, Ross is eager to work with Sam, hoping to make Captain America an official military position.
But that tentative alliance is jeopardized when Sam finds himself in the middle of an international incident, with friend and retired super-soldier Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly) as the prime suspect. Sam’s investigation send him on a dangerous chase, and the trailer ends with a deadly showdown and a tease of the menacing Red Hulk.
The trailer also features a few familiar faces: Danny Ramirez returns as former Air Force lieutenant Joaquin Torres, who’s picked up Sam’s old wings and taken on the role of Falcon. Tim Blake Nelson is also back as Samuel Sterns, AKA The Leader, appearing in the MCU for the first time since 2008’s The Incredible Hulk.
New to the cast is Shira Haas, who joins as Ruth Bat-Seraph. A former Black Widow, Ruth is now a high-ranking U.S. government official who has the trust of President Ross. Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, and Xosha Roquemore also star.
The film is directed by Julius Onah and produced by Kevin Feige and Nate Moore. Louis D’Esposito and Charles Newirth serve as executive producers.
Brave New World’ Has Forgotten ‘Eternals’ Celestial As A Major Plot Point
After being seemingly forgotten about since its release in 2021, the end of Eternals planted something in the MCU that should have been impossible to ignore. But ignored it was. That would be the massive, frozen Celestial statue emerging out of the ocean that the Eternals stopped from destroying the planet.
But there it sits, despite not being referenced at all in the MCU to this point out of an easter egg or two. However, that is absolutely about to change with the release of Captain America: Brave New World.
Today’s trailer revealed, however briefly, that the Celestial will be a part of the plotline, showing a moment where missiles are fired near it. It is likely going to be far more than just a backdrop, however, proving a number of alleged leaks and theories right. Potential spoilers follow from here.
The idea is that the Celestial, the dead Tiamut, has been discovered to be a resource of rare material that the global powers of the world are now fighting to control, hence all the missiles. A further theory is that this may be how Adamantium is introduced to the MCU, the impossibly strong metal that rivals Vibranium, and of course has direct connections to the X-Men as it makes up Wolverine’s bones and claws.
Further theories go past this, speculating that Tiamut may actually become Genosha itself, the island haven for mutants in the comics, but I’m not sure we can go quite that far yet. Other reports are that the Thunderbolts will have something to do with Genosha in their film.
Right now, we do not have any characters, that we know about, that would employ adamantium in the film. The main villains appear to be The Leader, Ross’s Red Hulk and whoever Giancarlo Esposito is playing. I do wonder if someone may end up using adamantium by the end of this, given that it would be more than a match for Sam’s Vibranium shield. The main difference in the comics is that Adamantium is stronger than Vibranium, but more rigid and harder to use for a wider variety of purposes, hence the rise of Wakanda. Adamantium has been shown to be essentially unbreakable, while that’s sometimes not true for Vibranium.
This does seem like part of the long, slow march toward the X-Men, whether this introduces Vibranium, Genosha or both. I think the first introduction was the change of Ms. Marvel to have the mutant gene, but the full reveal of the X-Men is likely not going to be until either the upcoming Avengers movies or after. For now, we’ll have to settle for these hints and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine invading the MCU.
